BEING A GOOD CIVIC CITIZEN: STAYING IN THE KNOW

Updated: Aug 29, 2022

This blog post is the first in my series, Civic Citizens Series on Communication. It aims to help Grey Highlands residents communicate better with our municipality.

I have heard more than one constituent cry out in frustration,

“How was I supposed to know that?”

when I have informed them of something going on at the municipality. It might be something small, like a small set back adjustment for a new shed or it could be something larger like a By-Law to allow for backyard hens or larger still a review of the Official Plan

People want to be informed so I should not be surprised when the next question is,

“Can you tell me when {insert area of concern} is on a Council agenda”.

On the surface it seems reasonable, certainly I can throw an email to So-and-So or a text to Whosie-Whatsit when their issue hits the Council Agenda. And, I try. I really, really do, but it is almost impossible for me to keep track of who cares about which issues.

Hence, this blog post on how you can stay informed on municipal issues.

Are you looking to give feedback to the municipality? Then this is the blog series for you! Check it our for tips and tricks on ways to express your thoughts and feelings on all things Grey Highlands or GH the short form I often use here on Danielle Blogs.

There are several easy ways you can stay informed and up-to-date on all the going-ons at the municipality. These ways are (mostly) ways that the municipality "talks" to the public (that's you).

Additionally, there are two different avenues to speak to Council and/or Grey Highlands' staff. These are ways you can give feedback to the municipality

DID YOU KNOW? That Grey Highlands is officially named "The Municipality of Grey Highlands", but most of the time we organically call our municipality simply "Grey Highlands".

The first half of this series explores the municipality "talking" to you through; Social Media, The Grey Highlands App, The Grey Highlands Website, including Community Calendar.

Social Media

The municipality is not Tik Toking yet, but Grey Highlands is on many social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Come and doom scroll with me! ;-)

PRO TIP: Don't forget to follow me, as well as follow the Grey Highlands Economic Development Department on the socials!

The Grey Highlands App

I understand that not everyone has a smartphone, but if you do, I strongly suggest you download the Grey Highlands app. It automatically synchronizes with greyhighlands.ca so is always up-to-date with the latest and greatest.

It is available for both Apple and Android.

The Grey Highlands Website

greyhighlands.ca is your main go-to for all things Grey Highlands. All things.

Check it out for links to the most accessed and relevant information.

Grey Highlands Connect

Connect is a software tool that displays links to the latest and past newsletters and timely topics like budgets, the Strategic Plan, as well as other high-level strategic documents.

Community Calendar

The Grey Highlands Community Calendar lists public events submitted by Grey Highlands residents. The public can submit events.

DISCLAIMER The staff at The Municipality of Grey Highlands are experts in their respective fields. If something here is different than staff's advice, always follow staff's direction. And, then please email me at danivaliquette@gmail.com with what I got wrong.
