Qs FROM CONSTITUENTS: WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT GOING TO TWO INDOOR ICE SURFACES IN GH?

This blog series explores some of the questions I have been asked by Grey Highlands' constituents. This post reviews the Recreation Master Plan and its suggestions to move from four indoor ice surfaces to two.

We are interested to know your position regarding the possible closure of one of the arenas/ recreation centres within Grey Highlands. As a voter, we look forward to your response prior to the upcoming election.

As you know there are currently four indoor ice surfaces in Grey Highlands: Markdale, Flesherton, Osprey and Rocklyn. Additionally, Grey Highlands also has five outdoor ice surfaces: Priceville, Flesherton, Markdale, Osprey and Eugenia. A Recreation Master Plan (written by a consultant) has been released with their suggestions for Grey Highlands. It suggests going from four indoor ice surfaces to two indoor ice surfaces. (Note the difference here between arenas and ice surfaces, no one is suggesting these buildings should be closed.) It will be Council that determines what is (and is not) implemented.

In my humble opinion, I believe that Grey Highlands would be well served with three indoor ice surfaces: Rocklyn, Osprey and Flesherton. I believe that the ice surface in Markdale could be converted so that this space could be used for things like dance lessons, gymnastics, pickle ball and so on. Additionally, I believe that increasing parks and recreational programming will have economic benefits because parents won't be driving to Hanover (or elsewhere) and spending their money there instead of within Grey Highlands.

Grey Highlands is looking for feedback on the Master Rec Plan suggestions, so please share your thoughts.
